Officials have called it a miracle that only one of the 131 people aboard the jet was killed in the crash on San Andres Island. Five others were seriously injured.
Officials were investigating reports that the Aerovias de Integracion Regional SA plane, which left Bogota about midnight, had been hit by lightning before crashing just short of the runway at 1:49 a.m. on San Andres Island, a resort area of 78,000 people about 120 miles east of the Nicaraguan coast. Firefighters quickly doused the beginnings of a fire on a wing, police said.
Passengers, Crew
The only fatality among the 125 passengers - including at least eight U.S. citizens - and six crew members was Amar Fernandez de Barreto, 68, who may have suffered a heart attack, officials said. They said 119 people were treated or checked at local clinics.
