Best extra: Commentary with director David Nixon and co-writer/co-director Patrick Doughtie.
Patrick Doughtie was beside himself with grief after losing his 9-year-old son, Tyler, to brain cancer. Instead of taking the beaten path and starting a foundation or writing a book, Doughtie wrote a screenplay. Before long, he found himself tearing up in the co-director's seat as he watched Tyler's story unfold on camera. It was an emotionally exhausting endeavor, but an important way honor the life of a child who had changed his.
"Letters to God" is part cancer awareness and part call to prayer; it's a powerful combination. Though faith-based films aren't for everybody, the people likely to pick this up at the video store will be pleased.
The story follows a young boy fighting cancer who writes a letter to God each day and drops it in the mailbox. From a downtrodden mail-carrier to the bully at school, Tyler's letters strengthen the faith in those around him.
